Day 1: Visiting Matt and Janna in San Antonio

Posted: June 16, 2020
On our way down to South Padre, we stopped in and visited Matt and Janna in San Antonio. The kids spent the afternoon playing games and swimming in the hot tub on the back porch. Its fun to see all the cousins together - I hope they can continue this type of gatherings as they get older - time will tell.

Day 2: Arrive in S. Padre

Posted: June 17, 2020
In the morning we continued our journey south and stopped for lunch at a Whataburger. By afternoon we arrived in South Padre and checked into our Air B&B place near the beach. It was a nice place within walking distance of the water. We met up with Nellie and Cara down the island at Laguna Bob's and had some dinner and watched the sunset over the water which was nice. We headed back to the condo and after dark walked down to the beach. Charlie, Addy and Alex built a mini sand castle in the dark. I don't think it will survive high tide :-)

Day 3: South Padre Beach Day!

Posted: June 18, 2020
Today the kids spent a majority of the day playing in the surf. The kids all got boogie boards so there was some surfing to be done. Great weather and the surf wasn't too strong so it was enjoyable. I think this was the first time Mia had been to a beach possibly? We headed back to the condo around lunch and the kids took a break and played games and watched some movies. Fun times!

Day 4: Morning at the Beach

Posted: June 19, 2020
In the morning the kids went back down to the beach again. Sean arrived and joined the party. The kids spent a couple hours horsing around in the water and then we headed back to the condo for lunch. More exploring planned for the afternoon.

Day 4: Afternoon with Sea Turtles

Posted: June 19, 2020
In the afternoon we went to the Sea Turtle Rescue to check it out. Sea turtles are always fun to see. Most of the patients in the rescue have been hurt in some manner and can't survive out in the wild any longer so its good that they have a place like this to take care of them. South Padre is one of the breeding spots for the leather-back turtles so the rescue tries to support the breeding rituals and make sure people don't disturb them for the annual egg laying and the birth of the young turtles so they can get to the ocean safely. This is a neat place to visit.

Day 4: Evening with Dolphins

Posted: June 19, 2020
We took a late afternoon tour to go dolphin watching. We got on a boat and headed out to the break waters to see some dolphins. As the boat progressed, we ended up seeing some dolphins playing in the wake of the boat and around the the area. There we pelicans flying around and they had some sea life on board that the kids could hold. It was a nice boat ride and a good way to close out the day - now onto dinner!

Day 4: Dinner at the Donkey

Posted: June 19, 2020
For dinner we went to the world famous Señor Donkey restaurant (OK, I don't know how world famous it really is). We all had some good Mexican food and wound down for the evening. It was a busy day and we got a lot in for one day.

Day 5: Morning Walk on the Beach

Posted: June 20, 2020
In the morning, we took a last long walk on the beach and did some sea shell collecting. Sean went out in the surf to swim and I thought at one point we'd lost him - the surf was pretty rough and he went way out. Mia got to play in the water with her mom and dad and everyone had a good time. We headed back the condo for lunch - can you tell who got too much sun in this trip?

Day 5: Afternoon Snorkeling in the Bay

Posted: June 20, 2020
In the afternoon we went on a snorkeling excursion in the inner bay. Cara and Matt and Braden joined us for the event. It was interesting swimming around with the kelp beds and fish - got to see some up close. The kids had a blast doing this. we then went back to the Longboard Restaurant and had dinner - it was a good way to end this vacation. Covid has obviously impacted some things, but all in all, we had a good time.
